Welcome to the Sovereign Cherokee Nation Tejas
The story of the Sovereign Cherokee Nation Tejas (SCNT) goes as far back as the history of our people, as told in the stories by our “elders". “We pronounce the word Cherokee as Tsa – La – Gi. Our language reveals an Iroquois and Algonquian ancestry.
We Cherokee call ourselves, and are known as, the ANIYUNWIA, the “Principal People.”
Anthropologists and archaeologists state that our ancestors came from north central and northeastern Asia and Russia in the most recent Ice Age. What is now the Bering Strait, which connects the Chukchi Sea and Ar tic Ocean with the Bering Sea and North Pacific, was a stretch of dry land these archaeologists have dubbed Bering. More specifically they propose that the earliest American Indian tribes were migrants from Mongolia and neighboring regions of Siberia. We have herd these stories for centuries as they are recounted and retold from generation to generation by the white historian, for a more detailed archaeological dating account of the peopling of the Americas refer to chapter four of the “VOYAGES of the PYRAMID BUILDERS,” by Robert M. Schoch, Ph. D. however our elders tell us we were sent here by the GREAT SPIRIT. The elders also tell of the beginning of our people.
Presently there are numerous Cherokee Tribes, fifty three by last count, which enjoy the cultural and historical legacy of our ancient ancestors. The various tribes are best described as “cousins” of each other.
